Berikut laporan dari The Star online:

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Government will focus on sports tourism as it can be used as an impetus to escalate economic growth in view of the global financial meltdown.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said efforts should be placed on enhancing identified sectors like sports tourism although Malaysia’s economic status is stable and can withstand the impact of the sluggish global economy.

“Therefore, sports tourism should not be seen as a trivial sector as it could be promoted to foreigners, thus churning better economic growth for the nation. We should focus on it, ” he said Thursday during his speech after launching the FEI-World Endurance Championship 2008 “countdown” which will be held here from Nov 6- 9.

He said sports tourism like the FEI-World Endurance Championship will create a spillover effect where the locals can benefit while also attracting tourists to the country.

Najib said the Government will continue to give priority to developing the industry.

He said during the championship, some 150 participants from 34 countries, including Latin America would be participating hence the event would gain wide coverage from international media like ESPN, Star Sports and CNN.
